The General Electric Passport is a turbofan developed for Bombardier's large, long-range business jets. It entered service in 2018 and powers the Global 7500 and Global 8000. GE's data sheet places it in the 18,000–20,000 lbf takeoff-thrust class.[1][2][3]
Integrated fan construction
A distinctive feature is the fan bladed disk, or blisk, which combines the blades and disk in an integrated rotor. GE associates this technology with reduced noise and a smoother passenger environment. The engine also uses active clearance control, a proprietary exhaust arrangement and a high-efficiency tail mixer as part of an architecture drawing on GE's wider commercial-engine experience.[2][3]
Efficiency features
GE identifies a high-efficiency compression system, rich-burn combustor and turbine technology among the elements supporting Passport's fuel performance. These work with the fan and exhaust mixer rather than relying on a single component to produce the improvement. The manufacturer has compared Passport's fuel consumption favourably with the older CF34-3, its established engine for a different generation of business aircraft.[1]
Long-distance operation
On 7 October 2019, Passport engines powered a Global 7500 from Sydney to Detroit over 8,225 nautical miles. The flight illustrated the long-range capability of the complete aircraft and propulsion installation. GE subsequently used that achievement in its account of the programme's development, connecting the engine with business aviation's demand for nonstop travel between distant city pairs.[4]
Monitoring and maintenance
The engine's full-authority digital control also supports data monitoring. GE's technical literature describes prognostic health management extending beyond basic performance recording, intended to assist maintenance planning and reduce downtime. Alongside the mechanical design, this monitoring system forms part of Passport's support strategy for aircraft that may operate long flights far from their home maintenance base.[3]
