The General Electric T64 is a free-turbine engine developed in turboshaft and turboprop forms. It became a principal powerplant of the Sikorsky H-53 heavy-helicopter family and later powered the Bell V-280 technology demonstrator. The programme followed the smaller T58 as the US Navy sought substantially more shaft power.[1][2][3]
Common-core programme
The Navy's initial requirement was for an engine in the 2,600 hp class. GE's account describes a programme covering two engine forms with the same compressor, combustor and turbine core. The T64 was also the company's first front-drive engine, using a coaxial shaft arrangement. It consequently supported both rotorcraft and fixed-wing applications rather than a single helicopter alone.[1]
Heavy-helicopter improvement
The T64-GE-416 powered CH-53Es, while the Navy's MH-53E mine-countermeasures helicopter used the higher-output -419. NAVAIR described upgrades that combined improved fuel controls, titanium-nitride-coated compressor airfoils and better hot-section components. These changes addressed both power availability and the deterioration encountered in demanding military operating environments.[3]
Materials and durability
The T64 incorporated corrosion-resistant and high-temperature coatings, film-cooled turbine components and later erosion-resistant compressor coatings. GE's -419 programme account placed that model near 5,000 shp, showing the growth achieved from the original requirement. Such improvements connected increased output with the need to retain useful engine life in heavy-lift operations.[2]
Tiltrotor demonstration
Bell selected the T64-GE-419 for the V-280 Valor demonstrator, with GE providing installation, engineering and flight-test support. This was a technology-demonstration application within the Joint Multi-Role programme. In January 2019, the aircraft reached 280 knots true airspeed. An established heavy-helicopter engine thus helped test a new airframe concept, providing propulsion while the demonstrator explored its flight envelope.[2][4]
