The International Aero Engines V2500 is a two-spool turbofan used on the Airbus A319, A320 and A321, the McDonnell Douglas MD-90 and the Embraer C-390 Millennium. It entered service in 1989 and spans the approximately 22,000–33,000-pound thrust class.[1]
International programme
The engine is developed and manufactured through International Aero Engines, whose partners include Pratt & Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Aero Engines International, Japanese Aero Engines Corporation and MTU Aero Engines. The programme combines contributions from several industrial partners to support a common propulsion system across commercial and military aircraft.[2]
Engine technology
The design uses powder-metal turbine discs, single-crystal turbine blades, active clearance control and digital engine control. MTU identifies a modular arrangement and on-condition maintenance as additional characteristics. Its programme contribution includes development and manufacture of low-pressure turbine components, casing, accessories and external systems, together with engine testing.[1]
Commercial and cargo service
The V2500 became an alternative powerplant for the original A320 family and later extended into converted freighters. Pratt & Whitney records its use on the first A320 and A321 passenger-to-cargo conversions. Such conversions retained a mature propulsion system while redirecting aircraft from passenger transport to cargo work, extending the range of operating roles served by the engine.[2]
Military derivative
The V2500-E5 provides approximately 31,000 pounds of thrust for the Embraer C-390 Millennium. This application adapted the family to a military transport programme after its establishment in airline service. The related -A5 and -E5 models are supported through engine-maintenance networks, including MTU facilities with capabilities for the different versions. The programme therefore connects airline, freighter and military transport applications through a shared engine lineage.[2][1]
