The Lycoming T53 is a free-turbine engine family used as both a helicopter turboshaft and an aircraft turboprop. It powered the Bell UH-1 Iroquois, AH-1 Cobra and Grumman OV-1 Mohawk. Its front-drive arrangement became influential in American turboshaft design.[1]
Development
In July 1952, Lycoming received a contract to develop the LTC1, given the military designation T53-L-1. The engine was military-qualified in 1958, and the first production example was delivered in 1959. The programme marked Lycoming's entry into aircraft gas turbines and subsequently contributed to the expansion of US Army air mobility during the Vietnam War.[2]
Turboshaft and turboprop forms
The original requirement concerned an engine in the 500–700-horsepower class, and Lycoming considered designs that could serve helicopters by removing the propeller gearbox. The resulting family used a front output and concentric shafts. In the preserved T53-L-7 turboprop, a five-stage axial compressor and centrifugal stage feed an annular combustor, with separate gas-generator and free-power turbines. That version is rated at 1,100 shaft horsepower.[2]
Helicopter development
Development of the T53-L-13 began in 1959, and the engine first ran in 1960. The family was important to both utility helicopters and dedicated gunships through its UH-1 and AH-1 installations. A common propulsion lineage therefore supported troop transport, battlefield support and observation aircraft during the growth of turbine-powered Army aviation.[1]
Ownership succession
After passing through Honeywell's portfolio, the T53 transferred to Ozark Aeroworks. Honeywell's customer communication of 22 December 2021 announced the ownership transfer and directed operators to Ozark for support. Ozark identifies itself as the engine-line OEM and provides manufacturing, maintenance, engineering assistance and spare-parts support, continuing the programme beyond its original developer.[3][4]
