Pratt & Whitney Canada PW300

The Pratt & Whitney Canada PW300 is a turbofan family serving medium-size and larger business jets. It encompasses the PW305, PW306, PW307 and PW308 series, broadly covering the 4,700–8,000-pound thrust class. Applications range from Learjets and Citations to several Dassault Falcon models.[1]

Engine architecture

The family uses two rotating systems. A five-stage high-pressure compressor combines four axial stages with a centrifugal stage and is driven by a cooled two-stage turbine. A separate three-stage low-pressure turbine drives the fan. The compressor's integrally bladed rotors reduce the number of individual parts, while variable inlet guide vanes and bleed valves manage airflow.[2]

Combustion and exhaust

The through-flow combustor incorporates TALON technology in later models, addressing emissions and durability. An exhaust mixer combines the engine's gas streams and contributes to noise and fuel-consumption performance. The fan uses titanium blades designed to withstand foreign-object encounters and to allow repair or replacement while the engine remains on the aircraft.[2]

Aircraft-specific versions

The PW305A powers the Learjet 60. PW306 versions serve the Gulfstream G200, Dornier 328JET and Citation Sovereign and Latitude families. Larger PW307 engines power the Falcon 7X and 8X, while the PW308A was selected for the Hawker 4000 and the PW308C for Falcon 2000EX/DX aircraft. The Dornier installation also demonstrates use outside the business-jet role.[1]

Digital control and support

Many PW300 models use dual-channel full-authority digital engine control. Besides managing engine operation, these systems provide health monitoring and diagnostic information and integrate with aircraft electronics. The family thus combines a shared gas-turbine arrangement with controls and ratings tailored to different aircraft. Its support requirements also influenced the design, including provision for borescope inspection of the compressor.[2]
