The Pratt & Whitney Canada PW500 is a turbofan family for light and medium-size business jets. Its PW530, PW535 and PW545 series cover approximately 2,900–4,500 pounds of thrust and have been used extensively in Citation aircraft and the Embraer Phenom 300.[1]
Basic architecture
The two-spool design has a high-pressure compressor comprising two axial stages and one centrifugal stage. A single cooled turbine drives this compressor, while a separate two-stage turbine drives the fan. PW535 and PW545 engines add a fan-driven compressor boost stage. The engine also uses a reverse-flow combustor and an exhaust mixer.[1]
Business-jet installations
The PW530A powers the Citation Bravo, while PW535 versions serve the Citation Encore family and Phenom 300. The PW545 series is associated with the Citation Excel, XLS and XLS+ and was developed further for the Citation Ascend. The family's emphasis on durability and maintenance access reflects use by business-jet operators flying repeated missions, including fractional-ownership fleets.[1]
PW545D development
Textron Aviation selected twin PW545D engines for the Citation Ascend announced in May 2023. Transport Canada granted engine type certification on 9 May 2024. Pratt & Whitney reported that the certification programme included 630 hours of engine testing and a further 230 hours of flight testing on the prototype aircraft.[2]
Controls and efficiency
The PW545D introduced an improved mixer and efficiency changes in the compressor and turbine, intended to reduce fuel consumption and operating temperature. Its full-authority digital engine control also enabled integration with the Ascend's autothrottle. This development extended the PW500 through changes to both the engine's internal components and its relationship with the aircraft's flight-deck systems, rather than through a thrust increase alone.[2]
