The Pratt & Whitney F119 is a twin-spool afterburning turbofan powering the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor. Two F119-PW-100 engines give the fighter the ability to sustain supersonic flight without afterburner, known as supercruise. The engine combines a 35,000-pound thrust class with a nozzle that can redirect thrust in the vertical plane.[1]
Advanced Tactical Fighter origins
Pratt & Whitney developed the YF119 during the 1980s for the Advanced Tactical Fighter demonstration and validation programme. In 1990 the prototype engine flew in both competing aircraft designs, the YF-22 and YF-23. The US Air Force selected the F119 in April 1991 for the resulting F-22 programme. Reducing maintenance was an explicit design objective: the museum's history records a target of substantially fewer parts than contemporary operational engines.[2]
Core architecture
The production engine has a three-stage integrally bladed fan driven by a single-stage low-pressure turbine. A separate six-stage high-pressure compressor is driven by a single-stage high-pressure turbine, with the two systems rotating in opposite directions. The hot turbine uses single-crystal superalloy blades and cooling technology to withstand demanding operating conditions.[1]
Thrust vectoring
The convergent-divergent exhaust nozzle can direct thrust up to 20 degrees above or below its centreline. Its movement is integrated with the aircraft flight-control system and managed by the full-authority digital electronic control. The same control architecture supports engine diagnostics and maintenance monitoring. Thrust vectoring therefore operates as part of the aircraft's overall control system.[1]
Operational significance
The prototype programme demonstrated that a fighter engine could combine high thrust, reduced maintenance demands and supersonic operation without continuous afterburner. Avoiding afterburner during supersonic flight reduced fuel use and offered greater combat radius, a central reason the capability mattered to the Advanced Tactical Fighter requirement. The resulting F119 established the propulsion foundation for the F-22 rather than merely providing a larger replacement for earlier fighter engines.[2]
