Pratt & Whitney PW4000

The Pratt & Whitney PW4000 is a family of large commercial turbofans divided into three principal groups by fan diameter: 94, 100 and 112 inches. These groups serve different widebody aircraft and thrust requirements. The first, the 94-inch engine, entered revenue service in 1987.[1][2][3]

Original 94-inch family

The original PW4000 covers ratings from 52,000 to 62,000 pounds of thrust. Applications include versions of the Boeing 747 and 767, Airbus A300 and A310, and McDonnell Douglas MD-11. Its design incorporates full-authority digital electronic control and single-crystal superalloy materials. The published bypass ratio is approximately 4.8:1 to 5:1, depending on model. The family also received approval for 180-minute extended-range twin-engine operations.[1]

Airbus A330 development

The 100-inch PW4000 was developed specifically for the Airbus A330 and introduced in 1994. Its takeoff thrust range is 64,500–70,000 pounds. Pratt & Whitney supplied the complete propulsion package, including nacelle, thrust reverser and accessories. The later PW4170 Advantage70 programme was offered both as a new engine and as an upgrade to existing engines, combining a higher thrust rating with improvements in fuel consumption and durability.[2]

Boeing 777 development

The 112-inch version serves the original Boeing 777-200, 777-200ER and 777-300. It occupies the 74,000–90,000-pound thrust class and uses powdered-metal discs, single-crystal materials and digital control. Maintenance access and modular construction remained design priorities despite the increase in size. The fan case can be separated from the core for transport without opening the bearing compartments; a complete engine can also be carried aboard a 747 freighter.[3]

Combustion improvements

Technology moved between branches of the family. The TALON low-nitrogen-oxide combustor offered for the 94-inch engine was derived from the 112-inch model. It incorporates replaceable liner panels and airblast fuel nozzles, addressing both maintainability and the mixing of fuel with air. The PW4000 therefore represents a series of related propulsion developments rather than one engine enlarged without changes for every aircraft.[1]
