Rolls-Royce Tay

Last approved September 13, 2026Revision e21ada7c

The Rolls-Royce Tay is a medium-bypass turbofan used in business jets, regional airliners and Boeing 727 re-engining programmes. Its applications include the Gulfstream GIV and the Fokker 70 and 100. Later business-aviation development produced the Tay 611-8C for the Gulfstream G350 and G450.[1][2]

Fan and core

The Tay uses two shafts and a wide-chord fan approximately 44–45 inches in diameter. Three low-pressure compressor stages sit behind the fan, while the high-pressure compressor has twelve stages. A two-stage high-pressure turbine drives the core compressor and a three-stage low-pressure turbine drives the low-pressure system. This combination places a comparatively large fan ahead of a compact, multi-stage core.[1]

Exhaust mixing

Much of the bypass duct is made from carbon-fibre composite material. Before the flow leaves the engine, a forced mixer combines the cooler bypass stream with the hot core exhaust. Rolls-Royce associates this arrangement with propulsive efficiency and reduced noise. The mixing system is therefore a significant part of the engine installation, alongside the compressors and turbines that supply the two streams.[2]

Business-jet development

The Tay established a long-running Gulfstream application as the sole powerplant for the GIV. The later 611-8C retained a proven core while adding a wide-chord fan and a digital electronic engine-control system for the G350 and G450. Manufacturer support for these engines includes engine-health monitoring, line maintenance and overhaul provision through the CorporateCare programme.[1]

Airline applications

The Tay 620 and 650 are associated with the Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 regional-aircraft programmes. The family also found an application in re-engined Boeing 727s, extending its reach beyond newly manufactured aircraft. These roles brought the engine into repeated short-sector airline use as well as corporate aviation. Rolls-Royce's regional-engine support offering includes individual shop visits, spare-engine leasing and on-wing services, reflecting the continuing maintenance needs of these mature aircraft fleets.[2]
