The Safran M88 is the afterburning turbofan powering the Dassault Rafale. Two engines equip the multirole fighter in both land-based and carrier-based service. The design combines a high thrust-to-weight ratio with a modular arrangement intended to simplify maintenance and support rapid engine replacement.[1]
Core technology
The engine incorporates integrally bladed compressor discs, powder-metallurgy discs and single-crystal high-pressure turbine blades. Ceramic coatings and thermostructural composite materials help components withstand demanding thermal conditions. These technologies support a compact fighter propulsion system that must tolerate frequent changes in operating state and a broad mission envelope.[1]
Thrust and controls
Dassault lists the M88-2 at approximately 10,971 pounds of thrust without afterburner and 16,620 pounds with it, corresponding broadly to the 50-kN and 75-kN classes. Redundant full-authority digital engine controls manage operation throughout the flight envelope. Dassault describes acceleration from idle to full afterburner in less than three seconds.[2]
Durability programme
The M88 Total Cost of Ownership programme began in 2008. It introduced high-pressure compressor and turbine changes, improved cooling and stronger components to increase life and reduce support costs. The subsequent M88-4E incorporated those improvements, with production deliveries beginning in 2012. The objective was to extend service intervals while preserving the performance needed by the Rafale.[2]
Production and support
Safran increased M88 production as Rafale export orders expanded, reporting that annual output tripled between 2015 and 2020. Its manufacturing changes included an automated assembly line. The modular design also supports maintenance at the operator level: Safran states that removal and reinstallation can be completed in approximately one hour. The programme therefore links fighter performance with both industrial capacity and practical aircraft availability.[1]
