The Safran Makila is a turboshaft engine family for heavy helicopters in the approximately nine-to-twelve-tonne class. Its principal applications include Airbus Super Puma and Cougar derivatives, now represented by the H215 and H225 families. Safran places its power range at approximately 1,800–2,100 shaft horsepower.[1]
Makila 1 applications
The Makila 1A1 and 1A2 serve Puma, Super Puma and Cougar installations. The 1A1 powers the H215, while the 1K2 was selected for South Africa's Denel Rooivalk attack helicopter. The engine family consequently supports transport and rescue aircraft as well as a specialised combat helicopter.[1]
Makila 2 development
The Makila 2A and 2A1 evolved from the earlier engine for the H225 and H225M Caracal. Safran records certification in 2004 and a takeoff output of 2,101 shaft horsepower, with 1,970 horsepower for cruise. This represented a fourteen-percent power increase over the Makila 1A. Digital engine control is part of the later family's approach to reducing pilot workload.[1]
Support expansion
Brazil provides an example of how support developed alongside aircraft adoption. Following acquisition of Super Puma helicopters by the Brazilian armed forces, Turbomeca expanded its local capabilities. A repair facility established at Xerém in 2002 included Makila work and subsequently gained European and US regulatory certification, enabling support for operators beyond Brazil.[2]
Local assembly
Brazil's acquisition of the H225M led to a further industrial partnership in 2011 for local assembly of Makila 2 engines and Saphir 20 auxiliary power units. The associated facility opened in 2012. This development connected the engine programme to a national helicopter fleet and its long-term industrial support, rather than relying solely on shipment of completed engines from the original manufacturing base.[2]
