The Airbus A330-900 is the larger passenger airliner in the A330neo family. It combines the longer A330 fuselage format with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, aerodynamic changes and an updated cabin. TAP introduced the aircraft into airline service in November 2018.[1][2]
Development and first flight
The A330neo programme paired the A330-900 with the shorter A330-800. Airbus flew the first A330-900 on 19 October 2017, beginning flight tests of the new engine and airframe combination. The aircraft retained the A330's basic twin-aisle architecture while introducing a higher-span wing and new systems.[1]
The two neo models were conceived as successors to the original A330's two passenger sizes. The A330-900 follows the capacity class of the A330-300.[1][3]
Engines and cabin
Both A330neo models use Trent 7000 engines. Airbus's account of the family's 1,500th delivery describes the engine's 10-to-one bypass ratio and the wing's carbon-fibre tips. These changes form part of the neo performance package, alongside cabin and systems revisions.[2]
The A330-900 has a 64-metre wingspan and a passenger cabin approximately 50 metres long. Airbus publishes representative three-class layouts of 287 to 303 passengers, with substantially higher seating possible in a dense configuration. The lower deck provides space for baggage and freight containers. An airline's allocation of premium seats, galleys and other equipment determines the actual passenger total.[3]
Entry into service and subsequent development
TAP was the first airline to introduce the A330-900. Its November 2018 service entry made the A330neo the first aircraft to carry Airbus's Airspace cabin concept into commercial operation. The cabin programme includes larger stowage provisions, lighting changes and space for airline-selected entertainment and connectivity systems.[2][4]
