F-BTSC

F-BTSC was a French-built Concorde Type 1 version 101 operated by Air France. It was Concorde production number 203, the first production-standard aircraft to enter the programme's numbered 200-series. On 25 July 2000 it was destroyed while operating Air France Flight 4590 from Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport to New York JFK. All 100 passengers and nine crew members aboard, and four people on the ground, were killed. It was Concorde's only fatal accident.[1][2][3]

Identity and numbering

F-BTSC was known as Sierra Charlie, following the final two letters of its registration. It first flew under the manufacturer test mark F-WTSC before being re-registered F-BTSC on 28 May 1975.[4][5]

Production number 203 and the BEA report's serial number 3 are different numbering conventions. A secondary airframe-history page labels the manufacturer serial as 103, but the primary accident report identifies the aircraft as Type 1 version 101, serial number 3. This article therefore preserves the official report field and uses 203 only for the Concorde production sequence.[2][4][6]

The BEA named the manufacturers at the time of the accident as EADS and BAE Systems, noting that they had been SNIAS and BAC when the aircraft was built. The powerplant was the four-engine Rolls-Royce/Snecma Olympus 593 installation used by production Concordes.[2][3]

Development and early use

F-WTSC made its maiden flight from Toulouse on 31 January 1975. It was originally a production-standard version 100 and took part in manufacturer route-proving and endurance flying, including work towards Dakar, Rio de Janeiro, Caracas, Lisbon and Gander. It was converted to the version 101 standard associated with the Air France fleet.[4][5]

Aérospatiale leased the aircraft to Air France on 6 January 1976. It was returned to the manufacturer in December that year after route-proving, airline and sales-promotion use, then re-leased to Air France on 11 June 1979. The BEA records its entry into airline service as 24 October 1979. Air France purchased it on 23 October 1980.[2][4][5]

These dates describe different legal and operational milestones. The January 1976 lease should not be presented as the final purchase date, and the October 1979 service-entry field does not erase its earlier temporary Air France use.

Air France service

Air France withdrew F-BTSC from regular operation on 1 November 1982 as its Concorde schedule contracted. It returned to service on 28 April 1986 to provide capacity while other aircraft underwent maintenance.[4][5]

From June 1998 to November 1999, F-BTSC underwent a major D01 overhaul. The work included replacement of a corroded keel beam and extensive inspection and testing. The BEA records 576 hours and 181 cycles between completion of that overhaul on 1 October 1999 and the accident.[2][4]

At 25 July 2000, the official report gave total airframe time as 11,989 hours and 4,873 cycles. Some contemporary and preserved-aircraft accounts give 3,978 landings. Because a reportable cycle and a landing total may have been compiled differently, this article retains the official cycle count in structured data rather than treating the two figures as interchangeable.[2][4][7]

Maintenance before the final flight

F-BTSC underwent a scheduled A01 check from 17 to 21 July 2000. During that work, the left main-landing-gear bogie was replaced to address an accepted deferred defect in the tyre under-inflation detection system. The aircraft then completed flights on 21, 22, 23 and 24 July. The BEA did not identify the scheduled check as the initiating cause of the accident.[2]

Flight 4590 had originally been planned with another aircraft; F-BTSC was assigned when the planned Concorde was unavailable. The charter carried passengers travelling to New York to join a cruise.[3][2]

Air France Flight 4590

On 25 July 2000, F-BTSC operated charter flight AFR 4590 from Paris Charles de Gaulle to New York JFK. There were 100 passengers, six cabin crew and three flight crew aboard. The aircraft began its take-off roll on runway 26 Right at 14:42 UTC.[1][2]

Five minutes earlier, a Continental Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-10 had used the same runway. A titanium-alloy wear strip, installed on that aircraft's number 3 engine thrust reverser in a manner that differed from the manufacturer's maintenance instructions, separated and remained on the runway.[2][3]

During F-BTSC's high-speed take-off roll, the front-right tyre of the left main landing gear ran over the strip and broke apart. A large tyre fragment struck the underside of the left wing. The BEA concluded that energy transmitted through the tank structure and fuel, with a possible hydrodynamic-pressure-surge contribution, tore a large piece from fuel tank 5. Escaping fuel ignited, creating a major fire under the left wing.[2]

The crew had already passed decision speed when the tyre failed. The aircraft became airborne but could neither accelerate normally nor climb away. The landing gear could not be retracted, and the fire and disturbed airflow caused severe loss of thrust first on engine 2 and later engine 1. The aircraft remained at approximately 200 ft for about one minute before control was lost.[2][3]

F-BTSC struck the Hôtelissimo at La Patte d'Oie in Gonesse, approximately 90 seconds after the take-off roll began. All 109 people aboard and four hotel employees were killed; six other people on the ground were injured. The aircraft and part of the hotel were destroyed by impact and fire.[1][2][3]

Investigation findings

The French Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses (BEA) led the safety investigation with participation from the UK Air Accidents Investigation Branch as the accredited representative of a joint state of design and manufacture. Three interim reports preceded the final report, which was made public on 16 January 2002.[1][2]

The BEA attributed the accident to a linked sequence:

  1. the tyre passed at high speed over a part lost by the preceding aircraft and was destroyed;

  2. impact energy from a tyre fragment caused a large section of tank 5 to be torn out through a complex combination of structural deformation and fuel movement;

  3. the leaking fuel ignited, producing a large fire and severe loss of thrust on the two left engines; and

  4. the landing gear's failure to retract probably helped retain and stabilise the flame.[2]

The report noted that severe structural damage caused by the in-flight fire would have led to loss of the aircraft even if the engines had continued operating normally. The metal strip initiated the sequence, but the investigation did not describe the accident as a simple tyre puncture or as an independent engine failure.[2]

Airworthiness response

The French Direction générale de l'Aviation civile and the UK Civil Aviation Authority suspended Concorde certificates of airworthiness on 16 August 2000. The accident ended a period of almost 25 years of commercial Concorde service without a fatal accident.[3]

The return-to-service programme addressed the accident sequence rather than a single component. Modifications included Michelin near-zero-growth tyres, protective liners in vulnerable fuel tanks, changes to landing-gear electrical wiring and associated operating and inspection measures. Regulators issued airworthiness directives in September 2001, and modified Air France and British Airways aircraft returned to passenger service that November.[3][8]

F-BTSC was a total loss and could not participate in the programme. Its loss reduced the Air France Concorde fleet from six physical airframes to five; the airline later modified and returned four aircraft to service while another remained withdrawn.[3][9]

Remains and commemoration

The BEA recovered and examined wreckage from the accident site as part of the technical investigation. Preserved-aircraft histories report that retained remains were transferred to secure storage at Le Bourget. They are not a complete display airframe and should not be described as a preserved Concorde.[2][4]

Memorials in Gonesse commemorate the victims of Flight 4590. F-BTSC remains one of only two completed Concordes that do not survive substantially intact: the other is F-BVFD, which was dismantled after withdrawal.[6][10]
