Air Hong Kong is a Cathay Pacific-owned cargo airline operating a regional express-freight network from Hong Kong International Airport. Its Airbus A330 freighters fly primarily in support of DHL's Asian parcel system.[1]
History
Air Hong Kong was founded in November 1986 and began charter operations in February 1988 with a Boeing 707 freighter. Cathay Pacific acquired a majority holding in 1994 and later developed the airline as a specialist regional cargo operator.[1]
A joint venture with DHL began in 2002. DHL eventually held 40 per cent of the company while Air Hong Kong built a dedicated express network. Cathay returned the airline to full ownership in 2018, but the close operational relationship with DHL continued.[1]
DHL network role
Air Hong Kong connects Hong Kong with major Asian cargo centres. Flights are timed around DHL sorting waves, carrying parcels and documents between local gateways and the Hong Kong hub.
This produces a different operating pattern from a general-freight airline. Reliability and precise overnight connections are central because a late inbound flight can disrupt thousands of individual shipment commitments.[2]
Fleet
The airline became the launch customer for the Airbus A300-600F general freighter and used the type extensively across Asia. Its modern fleet is based on Airbus A330 freighters, including factory-built A330-200Fs and converted A330-300P2Fs.[1]
The A330 provides containerised wide-body capacity while remaining suitable for sectors shorter than typical intercontinental routes. The JetPhotos image shows B-LDP, an A330-200F.
Cathay and DHL
Cathay Pacific provides ownership, aviation expertise and a Hong Kong operating platform. DHL supplies the express-network demand that shapes much of the schedule. Air Hong Kong remains a separately certificated airline with its own crews and designators rather than a DHL-branded virtual carrier.
The arrangement makes Air Hong Kong an important link between two major aviation groups and one of the longest-established dedicated express carriers in Asia.
