Blue Dart Aviation is an Indian cargo airline based in Chennai. It operates dedicated Boeing freighters for Blue Dart Express, the Indian logistics company within DHL Group.[1]
Formation
Blue Dart Aviation was incorporated in 1994 as a subsidiary of Blue Dart Express and began flying on 17 June 1996. Its first dedicated freighters were Boeing 737-200s, introduced to give the express company reliable capacity independent of passenger-airline schedules.[1]
The airline grew with India's time-definite delivery market. DHL's investment in Blue Dart Express connected the carrier to a global logistics group while retaining the established Blue Dart brand in India.
Domestic express network
Blue Dart Aviation links major Indian commercial and logistics centres from its Chennai base. Aircraft move documents, parcels, e-commerce shipments and other time-sensitive freight between hubs overnight so items can enter local delivery networks the next day.[2]
India's distances and road journey times make dedicated aircraft valuable for express logistics. A controlled freighter schedule also lets Blue Dart design departure times around its own sorting cut-offs.
Fleet
Boeing 757-200 converted freighters became the airline's principal type, offering useful payload, range and runway performance for high-volume domestic sectors. The JetPhotos image shows VT-BDA, a 757-200PCF.
Blue Dart added Boeing 737-800BCFs in 2023. The newer narrow-body freighters provide efficient capacity on routes that do not require a 757 and broaden the fleet to eight aircraft according to the cited profile.[1]
DHL relationship
Blue Dart Aviation is not branded as DHL Aviation, but it forms part of the wider DHL Group through Blue Dart Express. Its immediate task is the Indian Blue Dart network, while the group connection provides access to international logistics systems and transfer opportunities.
This local-brand structure distinguishes Blue Dart from wholly DHL-liveried airlines elsewhere. The airline remains an Indian certificated operator with its own crews, aircraft registrations and flight designators.
