Cargolux Airlines International is a Luxembourg all-cargo airline closely associated with the Boeing 747. It operates scheduled and charter freight services from its home base at Luxembourg Airport and uses an all-747 fleet of Boeing 747-400 and 747-8 purpose-built freighters.[1]
History
Cargolux began operations in 1970 with Canadair CL-44 freighters. Douglas DC-8s followed as the airline developed longer-range services and leasing work. Its defining fleet decision came in the late 1970s, when it ordered the Boeing 747-200F at a time when a European cargo operator using such a large aircraft was still considered unusually ambitious.[2]
The airline became the first operator of the production Boeing 747-400F in 1993. It was later a launch customer for the 747-8F and took delivery of the first aircraft in 2011. These milestones established Cargolux as one of the principal specialist operators of Boeing's purpose-built 747 freighters.[1]
Network
Luxembourg Airport is the centre of Cargolux's flight, maintenance and cargo-handling operation. The airline combines scheduled long-haul services with road feeder connections across Europe. Zhengzhou in China acts as a second hub, strengthening links between European, Asian and trans-Pacific markets.
Cargolux says its air and trucking network covers more than 90 destinations. Scheduled services are supplemented by charters when customers require dedicated capacity, unusual routings or specialist handling.[1]
Fleet
The Cargolux Group operates Boeing 747-400F and 747-8F aircraft. Its official fleet page lists 30 Boeing 747 freighters across the group.[3] The 747's hinged nose door allows long or outsized items to be loaded directly into the main deck, while the large side cargo door supports standard pallets and containers.
The 747-8F offers greater payload, volume and fuel efficiency than the 747-400F, but both types remain useful within the same operating system. Shared handling equipment, crew expertise and maintenance knowledge allow Cargolux to use the two generations together.
Cargo specialisms
Cargolux carries general freight alongside products needing dedicated procedures. These include pharmaceuticals, live animals, perishables, dangerous goods, valuable cargo, aircraft engines and heavy industrial equipment. Its purpose-built freighters are particularly useful where a passenger-aircraft belly cannot accept the shipment's dimensions or weight.
The company also performs third-party Boeing 747 maintenance in Luxembourg. This combination of airline operations, specialist load planning and in-house technical experience has made the 747 not only Cargolux's main aircraft but a central part of its identity.
