Antonov Airlines is a Ukrainian specialist cargo airline and a division of Antonov. It operates international charter flights for oversized, unusually heavy and project cargo that cannot travel in conventional freighters.[1]
Formation and heavy-lift role
Antonov Airlines was established in 1989 to market the Antonov An-124 Ruslan commercially. Its outsize-cargo niche is built around aircraft with a large nose door, kneeling landing gear and onboard loading equipment, allowing turbines, generators, locomotives, satellites and other indivisible loads to be flown without conventional airport cargo infrastructure.[2]
The carrier became closely associated with urgent industrial projects and humanitarian missions. Engineers plan each charter around the load's mass, centre of gravity, restraint points, loading method and the runway and handling limits at both airports.
Aircraft
The An-124 is the core of the airline's commercial fleet. Antonov Airlines also operated the unique six-engine An-225 Mriya, developed from the Soviet Buran spacecraft programme. The An-225 carried record-breaking loads and became the airline's most recognisable aircraft before it was destroyed during fighting at Hostomel Airport in February 2022.[1]
The JetPhotos image shows the An-225, registration UR-82060, before its loss. It remains an important part of Antonov Airlines' history even though current heavy-lift work is performed by the surviving An-124 fleet.
Operations after 2022
Hostomel near Kyiv was the airline's principal base before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After the battle for the airport, Antonov relocated its surviving commercial operation to Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany. The airline remains Ukrainian, while Leipzig provides a practical European base for maintenance, crews and worldwide charter departures.[1]
Specialist logistics
Antonov Airlines sells complete transport solutions rather than a conventional scheduled network. A typical project can include route surveys, load design, cranes or ramps, customs coordination, ground teams and engineers travelling with the aircraft. That combination of aircraft and technical planning has made the company one of the best-known names in outsize air freight.
