The General Electric T700 is a turboshaft developed for demanding military helicopter operations. It entered service in the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk in 1978 and subsequently powered numerous utility, attack and maritime helicopters. Its design emphasised added power, ruggedness and maintenance that could be performed close to the operating aircraft.[1][2]
GE12 development
The engine grew from the GE12 demonstrator, studied with US government support from the late 1960s. Experience in Vietnam had made helicopter reliability and field maintenance especially important. The Army launched the production T700 in 1972, turning the demonstrator work into a propulsion system for a new generation of rotorcraft.[1]
Compressor arrangement
The design combines axial and centrifugal compression. Air initially moves parallel to the engine centreline through the axial stages, then enters a centrifugal impeller that directs it outward. This mixed compressor arrangement is a distinctive part of the GE12/T700 development story and provided a compact basis for subsequent engine growth.[1]
Aircraft-specific versions
The T700-701D powers UH-60M Black Hawks and AH-64E Apaches. The -401D is associated with maritime H-60s and Bell's AH-1Z and UH-1Y helicopters. The -701K introduced a rear-drive arrangement for the Korean Surion. These variants retain family technology while adapting the output and installation to different helicopter designs.[2]
Modular maintenance
The engine is divided into modules and designed for straightforward replacement of line-replaceable equipment. GE highlights the absence of module-matching requirements and sealed sumps and bearings among its maintenance features. Modular repair also permits improved components to enter the fleet during servicing. Beyond military use, T700-701D engines power Firehawk helicopters adapted for firefighting, rescue and medical evacuation, extending the same operational emphasis into public-service missions.[2]
