Kalitta Air is an American all-cargo airline owned by Conrad “Connie” Kalitta and based at Willow Run Airport near Ypsilanti, Michigan. It operates scheduled freight services and on-demand charters using Boeing 747 and 777 freighters.[1]
Origins and history
Conrad Kalitta's cargo-airline experience predates the present company. His earlier American International Airways operated freighters, air-ambulance flights and passenger charters, and supported the United States airlift during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. American International Airways merged with Kitty Hawk in 1997.
After Kitty Hawk International ceased operations in 2000, Kalitta acquired the operating certificate and rebuilt the airline. Kalitta Air received its United States Department of Transportation and Federal Aviation Administration authority in November 2000 and began revenue service with three Boeing 747s.[1]
Operations
Kalitta Air provides scheduled and on-demand cargo capacity for customers in the United States and worldwide. Its work includes general freight, express networks, automotive and industrial cargo, livestock, government movements and time-critical charters. The ability to dispatch a large freighter for a single customer is an important part of its specialist role.
Willow Run Airport is the corporate and operational base. The company also maintains facilities at Oscoda, Michigan, on the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base. In-house maintenance, engine and component capabilities support the airline's fleet and provide technical services.
Fleet
Kalitta's official company overview describes a fleet of more than 25 aircraft composed of Boeing 747-400 and Boeing 777 freighters.[1] The 747-400F and converted 747-400 freighters provide nose-door or large side-door access, high payload and the ability to carry outsized loads.
The Boeing 777F provides long-range twin-engine efficiency for scheduled and charter freight. Kalitta is also introducing the Boeing 777-300ERSF, a passenger-to-freighter conversion with greater main-deck volume. Its training centre includes full-motion simulators for both the 747-400 and 777 fleets.[2]
Character and role
Kalitta Air's identity is closely connected with its founder. The radio callsign CONNIE refers to Conrad Kalitta, who built his aviation businesses alongside a prominent career in drag racing.
The airline often appears on routes where ordinary scheduled capacity is insufficient or unsuitable. A combination of large freighters, charter planning and internal maintenance allows it to respond to unusual loads and rapidly changing customer schedules. That specialist flexibility, rather than a single branded parcel network, distinguishes Kalitta from integrated carriers such as FedEx Express and UPS Airlines.
