Silk Way West Airlines is an Azerbaijani cargo airline based at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku. The Silk Way Group carrier operates Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 freighters between Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the Americas.[1]
Development
Silk Way West Airlines was founded in 2012 as the long-haul cargo arm of Silk Way Group. Baku's position between Europe and Asia allows the airline to combine traffic from several regions through one hub rather than depend on a large domestic market.[1]
The carrier grew rapidly through scheduled freighter services, charter flying and agreements with freight forwarders. Its network links major cargo centres across Europe, the CIS, East and Central Asia, the Middle East and North America.[2]
Fleet
The Boeing 747 has defined Silk Way West's visual identity and high-volume capability. The airline operates both converted 747-400 freighters and factory-built 747-8Fs, whose nose doors are useful for long or awkward cargo.
Boeing 777Fs have added a twin-engine long-haul option with lower fuel burn and operating costs than four-engine aircraft. The JetPhotos image shows 777F VP-BAU. Silk Way West has also ordered additional 777Fs and Airbus A350Fs as part of a longer-term renewal programme.[1]
Network and cargo
Baku functions as a transfer point for general freight, e-commerce, machinery, pharmaceuticals, perishables, valuable goods and oversized shipments. The airline operates scheduled services while retaining charter flexibility for routes or loads outside the regular timetable.
Its mix of 747 and 777 freighters supports two distinct strengths: nose-loading and very large-volume work on the 747, and efficient long-range operations on the 777F.
Role in Azerbaijan
Silk Way West is the largest cargo airline in the Caspian region. Its growth has supported Baku's development as an east-west logistics hub and given Azerbaijan a prominent role in international air freight despite the country's relatively small population.[1]
